The interferon B also acts on the stem-like properties of the breast cancer cells. It impairs the ability of the breast cancer cells to migrate and also prevents the formation of a metastatic tumor. The majority of the tumor cells are destroyed by chemotherapy but it is unable to remove the cancer stem cells. This is the major reason why the therapy fails in the patients. The interferon B can suppress the cells activity which can lead to improvement in the treatment outcomes.
In a study, the group noted that the interferon B targetted the cells directly. The cytokine had an effect on the cancer tissue even after the exposure has ceased. Also, the migration cells halved when compared to the control tissues that were not exposed to the treatment.
The cells that were treated with the interferon B had a reduced tendency to tumor-sphere formation compared to those which were not. With the recent finding and advances in medical technology, the chances for an effective and curable treatment has improved.
